The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA) has arrested four individuals for violating environmental safety regulations by using tyres to process animal hides during the recent Eid al-Adha festivities.

Dr. Mahmud Bose, Director-General of BASEPA, disclosed this information during an interview with journalists on Wednesday. He explained that the arrests were part of proactive measures implemented to protect public health and the environment during the celebrations.

"The suspects, apprehended during routine surveillance, were found using tyres to burn animal hides, a practice banned due to its serious health and environmental implications. They are set to appear before a mobile court for prosecution today," Dr. Bose stated.

Health and Environmental Concerns

According to the BASEPA Director-General, large quantities of contaminated meat were also confiscated and destroyed during the mass slaughtering that accompanied the Sallah celebrations.

"We banned the use of tyres as a measure to safeguard public health and the environment. Burning tyres releases harmful chemicals like dioxins and furans, which can lead to respiratory problems and long-term environmental damage," he explained.

The practice of using tyres to burn animal hides is common in some areas as it quickly removes hair from the skin. However, health experts warn that this method contaminates the meat with toxic chemicals that can cause serious health issues when consumed.

This enforcement action highlights the growing emphasis on environmental protection and public health safety during religious celebrations in Bauchi State.
