Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has emphasized that democracy must be measured by the well-being of citizens rather than merely by the conduct of elections as Nigeria commemorates 26 years of democratic governance.
In his Democracy Day message released on Wednesday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed stressed that for democracy to be meaningful, it must translate into tangible improvements in people's lives.
"Democracy is not just about elections, but about delivering tangible dividends that uplift the lives of the people. As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us reflect on how far we've come and recommit ourselves to building a just, united, and prosperous society," the governor stated.
Achievements and Call for Accountability
Governor Mohammed highlighted that his administration has made significant progress across various sectors in Bauchi State, attributing these achievements to purposeful leadership and people-oriented policies.
He used the occasion to call on leaders across Nigeria to embrace accountability and focus on policies that drive inclusive development and social justice.
The governor also paid tribute to pro-democracy heroes who laid the foundation for Nigeria's current democratic dispensation, urging citizens to uphold their legacy by defending democratic ideals.
As Nigeria marks this significant milestone in its democratic journey, Governor Mohammed's message resonates with the ongoing national conversation about governance effectiveness and the true meaning of democracy in improving citizens' quality of life.
