Afrobeats star Michael Adebayo Olayinka, popularly known as Ruger, has revealed that he donated his first music earnings to a church before going on to make millions in less than a year.
In a recent interview with VJ Adams, the singer disclosed that his first payment from music was N500,000, which he gave entirely to the church without using any of it for himself.
"My first earnings from music was N500,000 when I first came out. I can remember I gave everything to the church. I didn't use it," Ruger stated. "The next payment was N1 million. I was feeling like I had arrived. I went on a shopping spree. More millions came in a space of one year."
How Money Changed Him
The "Dior" hitmaker also admitted that his newfound wealth changed him in certain ways, which he believes is a universal experience for successful people.
"Money changed me in some ways. Money changes everybody. No one can say money didn't change them," he explained. "When you make more money a lot of things change; the way you address things, the way you even approach things is different. Some people don't stress when they have a lot of money."
Ruger expressed his aspiration to reach a level of success similar to that of American rap mogul Jay-Z, where he would no longer need to respond to critics or feel stressed about trivial matters.
"I want to get to a point where I no longer stress myself over anything. Look at Jay-Z for instance, he doesn't respond when people insult him knowing he is very successful. I'm looking forward to that level of success," he added.
This revelation comes as Ruger continues to cement his place in Nigeria's vibrant music scene, having previously mentioned that he started his musical journey in a church choir.
