Factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has alleged that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara has not taken any deliberate steps toward reconciliation amid the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Okocha claimed that Fubara has yet to initiate any reconciliation efforts with members of the State Assembly, warning that only genuine peace moves could prevent his impeachment.
"I can confirm that there is no reconciliation effort currently underway in Rivers," Okocha stated. "The suspended Governor, Fubara, has not made any move to reconcile with the lawmakers. Only genuine reconciliation can save him from impeachment, as the Supreme Court judgment stands."
State of Emergency in Rivers
The political situation in Rivers State took a dramatic turn on March 18, 2025, when President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency, citing threats to critical national assets. The President subsequently suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the State Assembly.
Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as Sole Administrator of the state for a six-month period. This presidential decision has faced criticism from political figures, civil society organizations, and legal practitioners, who have described it as "executive rascality."
Origins of the Political Crisis
The rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, became public knowledge on October 30, 2023, following an attack on the state Assembly complex by alleged arsonists that significantly damaged the chamber. However, both parties have yet to provide clear explanations for the underlying causes of their political disagreement.
The ongoing crisis has created significant political uncertainty in Rivers State, with various stakeholders calling for resolution through constitutional means.
