Suspected herdsmen launched fresh attacks in Agatu and Apa Local Government Areas of Benue State on Monday evening, resulting in multiple fatalities despite recent security assurances from military authorities.
In Agatu Local Government Area, Sunday Dutse, a native of Odejo and younger brother to a former chairman of the local government, was killed along the Odugbeho-Ogbaulu road. Dutse had previously been displaced from his community during an earlier herdsmen attack and had been taking refuge in Ogwule-Kaduna, also in Agatu LGA.
Earlier the same day, a separate attack occurred in EdikwG'Icho, a community in Apa Local Government Area, where three youths were ambushed and killed. According to reports, two of the victims were from EdikwG'Icho, while the third hailed from Ugbokpo.
Attacks Persist Despite Security Promises
These deadly incidents occurred despite the recent visit by top military authorities to the region, including the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), who had promised increased security measures in troubled parts of the state. The attacks raise serious questions about the effectiveness of current security arrangements in the area.
The Agatu and Apa communities have long been vulnerable to such attacks, with many residents previously displaced from their ancestral homes due to similar violence. Local sources indicate growing concern among community members about their safety and the ability of security forces to protect them.
As of the time of this report, authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the attacks or any measures being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and prevent further violence in the affected areas.
