Popular social media activist Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, arrived in Makurdi on Sunday to stand in solidarity with protesting Benue youths demanding an end to persistent killings in their communities.
The protest, which began earlier in the day, saw thousands of youths occupying the Abuja-Makurdi highway dressed in black attire while carrying placards and palm fronds. The demonstrators maintained a peaceful stance as they called for justice for over 200 victims reportedly killed in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, just 24 hours earlier.
Tensions Rise as Security Forces Intervene
The situation escalated when security forces moved in and fired teargas in an attempt to disperse the peaceful crowd. The action caused panic and confusion as protesters scrambled for safety, with reports indicating that some demonstrators sustained injuries during the chaos.
VeryDarkMan, who arrived during the crackdown, strongly condemned the use of force against unarmed civilians demanding justice. "This is unacceptable," he stated in a video livestreamed on his social media accounts. "These young people are mourning their loved ones, yet the government chooses to respond with teargas instead of action. We cannot be silent."
Background of the Protest
The protest comes amid growing concerns over the security situation in Benue State, particularly regarding attacks attributed to herdsmen. The Yelewata community massacre represents one of the deadliest incidents in recent times, fueling outrage among local residents who feel the government has not done enough to protect them.
VeryDarkMan's presence at the protest has drawn significant attention to the situation, with his large social media following helping to amplify the voices of the affected communities.
