The Niger State Government has awarded a contract for the construction of a 12-kilometre road project connecting Mokwa to Rabba communities at a cost of N7 billion. The project comes in the aftermath of devastating floods that affected the area.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago announced the project during an assessment and sympathy visit to flood victims in Mokwa Local Government Area. According to the governor, the road project will include the construction of four bridges to effectively link the two communities.
Immediate Action and Future Prevention
The governor emphasized that construction work would commence immediately, highlighting the urgency of reconnecting the affected communities. Beyond the immediate infrastructure response, Bago has directed relevant state agencies to conduct a comprehensive survey of waterways and topography across Niger State.
"I urge you people to unite and not to allow sentiments among you, especially in a period like this. I assure you of government continued commitment to the wellbeing of its citizens," Governor Bago told the flood victims during his visit.
The survey aims to identify residents living along waterways who may need to be relocated to prevent similar disasters in the future. This proactive approach demonstrates the government's commitment to long-term solutions rather than just emergency responses.
Assessment of Damage
As part of his visit, Governor Bago also inspected Rabba community to assess a bridge that was washed away by the flood and to express solidarity with affected residents. The destruction of this critical infrastructure had effectively cut off the community, hampering relief efforts and normal daily activities.
Earlier reports from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) indicated that the flood disaster in Mokwa had resulted in significant casualties, with recovery operations continuing in the affected areas.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also extended condolences to the Mokwa community, joining other organizations in solidarity with the flood victims.
This infrastructure project represents a significant investment in the recovery and future resilience of the affected communities, addressing both immediate connectivity needs and longer-term safety concerns.
