A 25-year-old internally displaced woman, Shidoo Tortiv, has delivered a set of quadruplets in Benue State, bringing both joy and concern amid challenging circumstances.

The mother gave birth to two boys and two girls on Saturday evening around 5:00 p.m. The delivery was conducted at home by local midwives due to financial constraints, according to the woman's husband, Wilfred Tortiv.

The couple, originally from Ucha village in Gwer West Local Government Area, had been forced to flee their home due to renewed violence and insecurity in the region. They sought refuge in Kula, a nearby community within the same council area, where they stayed with relatives rather than in an official Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.

Despite the challenging circumstances of the home delivery, both the mother and her four newborns were reported to be in good health initially.

Government Intervention

The Benue State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Aondowase Kunde, confirmed the births and stated that the state government had taken immediate action upon learning of the situation.

"Governor Hyacinth Alia immediately directed that the mother and her newborns be transferred to a hospital for proper medical care," Kunde said in a phone interview. "They were first taken to General Hospital, Naka, and now I'm waiting for them at Moses Adasu Hospital [formerly Benue State University Teaching Hospital] where they'll receive adequate attention."

The case highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by internally displaced persons in Benue State, where insecurity has forced many families to abandon their homes and livelihoods.

Multiple births under such precarious conditions present unique challenges for displaced families already struggling with basic necessities and healthcare access.
