Former Senate Leader and Borno South Senator Ali Ndume has issued a clarification regarding recent media reports claiming that former Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai was attacked by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

In a statement released on Monday, Ndume categorically denied these reports, explaining that it was Buratai town in Biu Local Government Area of Borno State that came under attack, not the former Army Chief himself.

"It was Buratai town in Borno state that was attacked, not the person of the erstwhile Chief of Army Staff," Ndume stated. "I am surprised that the town of Buratai could be misconstrued as the person of General Buratai, who incidentally hails from the town."

Security Situation in Borno and Beyond

The senator further elaborated on the broader security challenges facing not just Borno but various regions across Nigeria. "The situation is getting terrible in Borno; the situation is bad in all the six geo-political zones, except in the south. Even south-south, we are grappling with economic sabotage like oil theft. Southwest is the only region that is relatively safe," he added.

This clarification comes amid growing concerns about the resurgence of insurgent activities in parts of northeastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State, which has been at the epicenter of the Boko Haram insurgency for over a decade.

The confusion appears to have stemmed from comments made by Ndume during a recent appearance on a political television show, where his remarks about the attack on Buratai town were misinterpreted as referring to the former Army Chief.

Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai served as Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff from July 2015 to January 2021, playing a significant role in the country's counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in the northeast.

Security analysts note that such clarifications are crucial in preventing the spread of misinformation that could potentially impact public perception of the security situation in affected regions.
