A senior naval officer, Lieutenant Commodore M. Buba, was fatally stabbed at Kawo Bridge in Kaduna after refusing to surrender his mobile phone to an assailant during an attempted robbery.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred when the officer, who was on course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, stopped to change a flat tyre while returning to Jaji.
Details of the Attack
"He alighted from his car trying to change the flat tyre, when the unknown assailant suddenly appeared and demanded he hand over his phone. The senior officer refused, questioning the rationale when the assailant suddenly stabbed him in the chest with a local knife," an eyewitness recounted.
Suleiman Dahiru, a local vigilante who witnessed the altercation and attempted to help the officer, was also stabbed on the hand by the assailant. Reports indicate that the attacker was subsequently overpowered and lynched by bystanders.
A senior military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Lieutenant Commodore Buba was rushed to Manaal Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains have been transferred to the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital mortuary in Kaduna.
Security Response
"Troops in plain clothes, police and other civil security agencies have been mobilised and tasked on covert operations to identify and clear all miscreants loitering around bus stops and other black spots in Kaduna Metropolis," the military source added.
ASP Mansir Hassan, the Kaduna State Police Command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, describing it as 'unfortunate.' He assured the public that police operatives are working diligently to secure the area and the state at large.
This tragic incident adds to growing security concerns in Kaduna State, which has faced various security challenges in recent years.
