Kebbi State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, has welcomed the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Alhaji Muhammadu Iliyasu Bashar as the rightful Emir of Gwandu, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring lasting peace in the emirate.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Tafida congratulated the Emir on the landmark verdict that effectively ends a protracted legal battle spanning two decades. The dispute began in 2005 with the removal of Al-Mustapha Haruna Jokolo from the throne.

Call for Unity and Acceptance

The deputy governor urged all parties involved in the long-standing dispute to accept the court's decision in good faith and work collectively toward stability and development in the Gwandu Emirate.

"This judgment represents a significant opportunity for healing and progress in our emirate," Tafida stated. "I call on all stakeholders to embrace this ruling and focus on building a united Gwandu that can address the challenges facing our people."

The Supreme Court judgment, delivered on Wednesday, brings closure to one of Nigeria's most prolonged traditional leadership disputes, which has had significant implications for the political and cultural landscape of Kebbi State.

Flood Warning

In the same statement, the deputy governor also addressed environmental concerns, cautioning residents in flood-prone areas of the state to take necessary precautions by relocating to safer grounds. He cited recent flood incidents in neighboring Niger State as a warning of potential dangers.

"As we celebrate this resolution to our emirate's leadership question, we must also remain vigilant about natural disasters that could affect our communities," Tafida added.

The Gwandu Emirate, one of the most prominent traditional institutions in northwestern Nigeria, plays a crucial role in maintaining cultural heritage and community governance in Kebbi State.
