The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT) has issued a stern warning to students about the harmful effects of narcotics and banned substances during an awareness program at Dorben College of Digital Technology, Dutsen-Alhaji, Abuja.
Mr. Stanley Ugagbe, Operational Manager of NACAT, delivered a keynote presentation titled "Understanding Substance Abuse" to students, educators, and civil society actors, emphasizing the need for increased awareness about the devastating effects of drug abuse.
"Addiction doesn't start with a needle or a pill, it starts with a choice. And every choice has a consequence," Ugagbe cautioned the young audience. He stressed that students must be educated and empowered to become ambassadors of integrity and vigilance within their schools and communities.
Legal and Social Consequences
During his presentation, Ugagbe broke down the psychological, social, and legal implications of substance abuse, noting how experimentation often begins with peer pressure, emotional distress, or the desire to escape difficult circumstances.
He highlighted the severe legal consequences that could follow even minor drug offenses. "The law is not as forgiving as your parents or your teachers. One mistake can leave a permanent mark on your record," he warned, explaining that being caught with even small quantities of banned substances could lead to criminal charges that may ruin a young person's future.
Support and Prevention
The NACAT manager urged students to find strength in community, education, and personal values when facing pressures related to drug use. "You don't have to walk alone. Talk to someone, ask for help, and never be ashamed to say no," he advised.
Ugagbe also exposed the young people to the broader societal issues connected to substance abuse, including corruption and human trafficking. His message concluded with an empowering call to action: "The future is in your hands. Protect it. Guard it. And choose to rise above the traps set by drugs and bad influences."
The awareness program is part of NACAT's ongoing efforts to educate Nigerian youth about the dangers of substance abuse and empower them to make positive life choices.
