Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder of Salvation Ministries, has advised his congregation that believers should give offerings larger than their tithes to achieve financial prosperity.

During a recent sermon, Ibiyeomie emphasized that while tithing—giving 10 percent of one's income—forms the foundation of prosperity, offerings should exceed this amount, recommending at least 20 percent of income be given as offerings.

The Prosperity Formula According to Ibiyeomie

"Tithe is the foundation of your covenant to prosperity. Don't wait until month end before you pay your tithe. Anytime you get money pay 10% back to God as a lifestyle," Ibiyeomie stated.

The pastor attributed his own financial success to this practice, claiming, "In a month your offering should be bigger than your tithe. My offering for instance, I don't give less than 20 percent, that's why I'm not poor. Increase your offering more than your tithe and you'll never be broke."

Public Reaction and Criticism

The sermon has sparked debate, with critics arguing that such financial expectations could burden believers, especially during economic hardship. Some social media users have expressed concern about the implications of giving 30 percent of income to religious institutions.

One X user, Ikechukwu Seed Mkpulu, commented: "Offering 20% Tithe 10% Total 30% 30% of your hard earned money must go to Pastor Ibiyeomie's bank account if you really want to go to heaven. Nigerian pastors are worse than Nigerian politicians. Tufiakwa."

This teaching comes at a time when many Nigerians are facing significant economic challenges, raising questions about the responsibility of religious leaders in addressing financial burdens versus promoting giving practices.

The debate highlights the ongoing tension between prosperity gospel teachings and economic realities in Nigeria, where religious institutions play a significant role in society.
