The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has issued a stern warning to members who use social media platforms to insult party officials, threatening disciplinary action against offenders.
The warning came from the state party chairman, Chief Venatius Ikem, in a statement released on Friday following a meeting with PDP local government chairmen in Calabar.
"We seriously frown at the high rate of cyberstalking by some members on party officials, characterized by opening of unauthorized social media platforms where abuses are wantonly committed. Offenders will be punished to serve as deterrent to others," Ikem stated.
Verification Exercise to Identify True Party Executives
In a bid to sanitize the party structure, the Cross River PDP leadership has authorized a verification exercise to identify genuine party executives. According to Ikem, this initiative aims to create a stronger, more unified party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The chairman acknowledged ongoing attempts to entice PDP members to defect to other parties but commended those who have remained loyal despite such overtures. He described these enticements as exploitative tactics that capitalize on the economic hardship in the country for political gain.
Defections Downplayed
Ikem downplayed the significance of recent defections from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), suggesting that defectors were primarily seeking immunity from prosecution rather than acting on political principles.
"Some defectors to the APC aren't reaping any tangible benefits but rather seek to bask in the ruling party's aura, while some unscrupulous officials are exploiting its membership as immunity from prosecution," he said.
"In our assessment, these defections are largely driven by politicians who lack firm political ideologies and are highly motivated by venal interests," the statement continued.
The PDP chairman noted that despite defections to the APC, many politicians have also returned to the PDP with their supporters. He emphasized that political migration is not unique to Cross River State but is a nationwide phenomenon reflecting a lack of ideological commitment among some politicians.
Ikem urged party members to remain steadfast and loyal, stressing that the PDP remains Nigeria's most viable option for a better future.
