Two Niger Delta civic groups have called for strategic collaboration between regional stakeholders and the newly inaugurated South South Development Commission (SSDC) to foster inclusive growth and sustainable development in the region.

The United Youth Association and Relief International Africa made this appeal in separate statements released on Thursday, emphasizing that such partnerships would enhance effective service delivery across the South-South region.

The SSDC, established in March 2025 by President Bola Tinubu, has been mandated to address the developmental challenges facing the South-South region of Nigeria.

Addressing Regional Challenges

Ambassador Alfred Etuk, Senior National Advisor at Relief International Africa, noted that strategic partnership with the SSDC would help tackle pressing socio-economic and infrastructural challenges in the region.

"Relief International Africa looks forward to strategic collaboration with the SSDC under Akpabio's stewardship to deepen impact, empower local populations, and address pressing socio-economic and infrastructural challenges," Etuk stated.

He added that the organization is committed to working with the SSDC to drive positive change and progress throughout the South-South region.

Youth Development Focus

The United Youth Association similarly pledged its readiness to collaborate with the commission, particularly in implementing policies for youth development and overall regional progress.

"The organization is eager to work with the SSDC to implement initiatives that will benefit the youth and promote their well-being. The association believes that SSDC will play a crucial role in empowering the youth and promoting their participation in the development of the region," the group stated.

The United Youth Association also expressed confidence in the leadership of Usoro Akpabio, the Managing Director of SSDC, stating that he would steer the Commission toward inclusive growth, sustainable development, and effective service delivery.

The South-South Development Commission represents a significant step in addressing the unique developmental needs of the oil-rich Niger Delta region, which has historically faced environmental degradation and infrastructure deficits despite its economic contributions to Nigeria.
