The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has raised alarm over the severe environmental degradation plaguing the Niger Delta region due to decades of oil extraction activities.

In a statement released to mark World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, the organization highlighted that despite being a major source of Nigeria's oil wealth and a recognized biodiversity hotspot, the Niger Delta remains one of the most environmentally devastated regions globally.

Call for Reduced Gas Flaring and Environmental Restoration

Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, appealed to oil and gas companies operating in the region to significantly reduce gas flaring practices that contribute to environmental pollution and climate change.

The advocacy group also urged these companies to adequately fund environmental restoration initiatives, specifically mentioning the Ogoni Clean-up being implemented by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) and the Bayelsa State Environmental Assessment Report, which is estimated to cost approximately $12 billion.

Government Agencies Urged to Enhance Response Capabilities

YEAC-Nigeria called on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to strengthen its oil spill response capabilities to better address environmental emergencies in the region.

In alignment with this year's World Environment Day theme, "Beat Plastic Pollution," the Centre advocated for effective plastic waste management strategies including recycling, waste-to-energy initiatives, and the promotion of biodegradable alternatives through strategic policies and community engagement.

"We urge policymakers to encourage investment in renewable energy, sustainable land-use practices, and climate change adaptation measures." - YEAC-Nigeria

The organization concluded its statement by calling for immediate and coordinated action from governments, corporations, and individuals to address Nigeria's pressing environmental challenges.
