Former President of Zambia, Edgar Lungu, has died at the age of 68 while receiving specialized medical treatment in South Africa, his political party announced on Thursday.
The Patriotic Front party confirmed in an official statement that Lungu passed away in Pretoria, where he had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness.
Six-Year Leadership and Political Career
Lungu served as Zambia's president for six years, from 2015 until 2021, when he was defeated in the presidential election by current President Hakainde Hichilema. After his electoral loss, Lungu temporarily stepped back from politics before later returning with renewed presidential ambitions.
In a brief video statement, Lungu's daughter Tasila revealed that her father, who had been "under medical supervision in recent weeks," died at a clinic in South Africa's capital at 06:00 on Thursday morning.
"In this moment of grief, we invoke the spirit of 'One Zambia, One Nation' – the timeless creed that guided President Lungu's service to our country," she added, referencing the national motto that defined her father's approach to governance.
The news of Lungu's passing has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum in Zambia and neighboring African nations, reflecting on his contributions to the country during his tenure as president.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements and official mourning periods are expected to be announced in the coming days as the nation prepares to honor the former leader.
