Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has expressed confidence that Nigeria can still secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite their current struggles in the qualifying campaign.

The three-time African champions currently face an uphill battle, sitting fourth in their group and trailing leaders South Africa by six points with just four matches remaining in the qualification series.

Nigeria's qualification hopes received a boost last week after winning the Unity Cup invitational tournament in London, which Chelle believes will enhance the team's confidence heading into crucial qualifiers scheduled for September and October.

Chelle Demands Warrior Mentality

While reflecting on the team's performance at the Unity Cup, Chelle emphasized the need for continuous improvement both physically and mentally.

"We scored goals, created chances and showed good signs in our overall play," the Malian tactician stated. "What matters most is playing together – in both attack and defence."

"We have to keep improving both physically and mentally. We must become true warriors on the pitch," he added, highlighting the fighting spirit needed to turn around their qualification campaign.

Crucial Fixtures Ahead

The Super Eagles' qualification hopes will be significantly shaped by their upcoming fixtures. Nigeria will host Rwanda's Amavubi in Uyo before traveling to face group leaders South Africa when the qualifiers resume in September.

These matches represent must-win situations for Nigeria if they hope to close the six-point gap and keep their dreams of appearing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alive.

The 2026 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will feature an expanded 48-team format, potentially offering more opportunities for African nations to qualify.
