Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Michael Aondoakaa, SAN, has condemned the renewed wave of violent attacks in Benue State, particularly in Gwer West, Makurdi, and Guma local government areas.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Makurdi, Aondoakaa described the attacks as "inhuman" and "a direct assault on the peace and dignity of the Benue people."
The former minister extended his condolences to families affected by the violence and emphasized the need for unity during this challenging period.
"We must not allow our pain or anything to divide us. This is the time for unity across tribes, parties, and beliefs. We are one Benue, and together we must stand, defend, and rebuild," he stated.
Call for Collaborative Action
Aondoakaa made a passionate appeal to all sons and daughters of Benue, regardless of political affiliation, to join hands with the traditional institution and community leaders in tackling the growing insecurity in the state.
He highlighted the crucial role of traditional rulers and local leaders in addressing the security challenges facing Benue communities.
"Our traditional institution remains the soul of our communities. Their leadership, wisdom and influence are vital in mobilizing grassroots vigilance, peacebuilding, and early conflict resolution," the former minister emphasized.
Demand for Government Action
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged both federal and state governments, along with security agencies, to act swiftly and decisively to bring perpetrators to justice and ensure lasting peace in the region.
Aondoakaa reiterated that every Benue citizen has the right to safety, dignity, and a voice in determining their future.
This call comes amid reports of recent arrests, with 11 herdsmen reportedly arraigned for terrorism in connection with the killings, and Governor Hyacinth Alia directing security operatives to affected areas while appealing for external assistance.
