The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has officially named the new Government House "Light House, Awka mini city," a designation that pays homage to the state's longstanding nickname as the "Light of the Nation."

Dr. Law Mefor, the Commissioner for Information, revealed this development while briefing journalists after Wednesday's ANSEC meeting in Awka. The naming represents a significant milestone in the state's infrastructure development under the current administration.

New Electricity Regulatory Commission Established

In addition to the Government House naming, Mefor announced the establishment of the Anambra Electricity Regulatory Commission. The state has already initiated a recruitment drive seeking subject-matter experts to staff the newly formed commission, which will operate according to the provisions of the Anambra State Electricity Law.

"This commission will play a crucial role in regulating electricity services across the state, ensuring reliable power supply to residents and businesses alike," Mefor explained.

Crackdown on Child Begging Operations

The commissioner also disclosed that the state government will take decisive action against premises used as holding places for child beggars. According to Mefor, such locations will be sealed and confiscated in compliance with existing laws, demonstrating the administration's commitment to child welfare and public order.

Industrial Development Initiatives

ANSEC has approved several contracts aimed at boosting industrial development in the state. These include:

  • Construction of a factory warehouse for processing pharmaceutical grade kaolin at the Kaolin Plant in Ukpor, valued at N190.5 million

  • Extension of the Nnewi industrial line, including supply and installation of a 750 KVA transformer at the Anambra State Kaolin Plant in Ukpor, at a cost of N110.1 million

  • Procurement and supply of official uniforms and operational gear for the "Operate Clean and Healthy Anambra" initiative, with an approved sum of N155.7 million

These investments highlight the state government's focus on industrial growth, infrastructure development, and environmental cleanliness as key pillars of its governance strategy.

The naming of the Government House as "Light House" symbolizes Anambra's aspirations to serve as a beacon of progress and development in Nigeria's southeastern region, while the accompanying initiatives demonstrate practical steps toward realizing that vision.
