Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has approved the establishment of a State Electricity Regulatory Commission to implement the recently signed Electricity Act in the state. The governor simultaneously ordered the sealing of all hideouts used by child beggars in accordance with the Anambra State Homeland Security Law 2025.
State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, disclosed these developments on Tuesday in Awka, stating that the decisions were reached during the 10th State Executive Council meeting at the new Government House, christened "Light House Awka."
According to Mefor, the state has already launched a recruitment drive to attract experts to join the newly established electricity commission. The name of the new government house complex aligns with Anambra's long-standing slogan, "Light of the Nation."
Key Contract Approvals
The Executive Council also approved several significant contracts during the meeting, including:
- Construction of a warehouse for pharmaceutical-grade kaolin at the Anambra State Kaolin Plant in Ukpor, with a contract sum of N190,482,467.94 and completion timeline of 8 weeks
- Supply and installation of a 750 KVA transformer at the same kaolin plant, valued at N110,114,510.60 with a 6-week completion period
- Procurement and supply of official uniforms and operational gear for the Ocha Brigade, Anambra State, at a cost of N155,653,550.00
The sealing of child beggars' hideouts appears to be part of broader efforts by the Soludo administration to address social issues in the state. Earlier reports indicated that the Anambra government had been working to rid Awka of urchins and return street children and beggars to school.
The establishment of the Electricity Regulatory Commission represents a significant step toward implementing the provisions of the Electricity Act at the state level, potentially improving power supply and regulation across Anambra State.
