The Nationwide League One (NLO) has initiated an investigation into serious match-fixing allegations leveled against the chairman of Cynosure FC, an Ebonyi-based football club.

According to a statement from the league body, the Cynosure FC chairman allegedly attempted to influence a league match in favor of his team by contacting the chairman of Liberty Lions FC Calabar a day before a crucial fixture.

Details of the Allegations

The NLO Secretariat revealed that the Cynosure FC chairman reportedly lobbied the Liberty Lions FC chairman to speak with the president of E-World FC, who happens to be his fellow indigene, to "assist him with the match." However, the Liberty Lions FC chairman declined the request, stating that he was "not ready to be part of his shenanigans."

Ironically, this was the same match that the Cynosure FC chairman had previously complained about because the result did not favor his club.

Official Response from NLO

The NLO Chief Operating Officer, Olushola Ogunnowo, confirmed the investigation in an official letter addressed to the Cynosure chairman through the Ebonyi State Football Association.

"The NLO Secretariat, acting on the rule book, has opened an investigation on both parties and will ensure the culprit did not go unpunished," the letter stated.

The league body expressed concern over the allegations, describing them as disturbing. The NLO has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter in accordance with its rulebook.

NLO's Stance on Match Integrity

This investigation comes amid the NLO's continued efforts to maintain the integrity of its league competitions. In recent months, the organization has taken decisive action against several clubs found guilty of match manipulation and other violations.

The league previously expelled Campos FC and A&A Kiviasennus for match manipulation, while Positive FA was expelled for missing three matches. In another case, La Planet FC's sporting director received a pardon after an assault incident involving match officials.

The outcome of this latest investigation could have significant implications for Cynosure FC and its chairman as the NLO continues its zero-tolerance approach to match-fixing and corruption in Nigerian football.
