The Appeal Panel on Local Government Election Petitions for Benue State has delivered a sweeping victory to the All Progressives Congress (APC), upholding the elections of all 23 local government chairmen under the party's banner. The landmark judgment, delivered on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) House in Abuja, represents a significant political triumph for Governor Hyacinth Alia and the ruling party in Benue State.

The appellate panel's decision effectively overturned previous rulings by the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals, which had nullified APC victories in nine local councils following the October 2024 elections conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).

Overturned Tribunal Decisions

The local government areas affected by the earlier tribunal rulings included Vandeikya, Konshisha, Kwande, Ushongo, Otukpo, Agatu, Ado, Apa, and Ohimini. However, the Appeal Panel dismissed all petitions filed primarily by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other opposition groups, citing lack of merit and insufficient evidence of non-compliance with electoral laws.

This verdict solidifies the APC's control over all local government structures in Benue State, strengthening Governor Alia's political position and extending the party's influence to the grassroots level across the state.

Reactions to the Judgment

Melvin Ejeh, Chairman of Agatu Local Government, expressed satisfaction with the Appeal Panel's decision, describing it as "a triumph of justice and democracy." In a reconciliatory gesture, Ejeh extended an olive branch to opposition parties, urging them to set aside political differences and collaborate with the elected leaders to deliver good governance and development to local communities.

The judgment comes amid ongoing political tensions in Benue State, where the APC has been working to consolidate its position since Governor Alia's election. Political analysts suggest this victory will significantly boost the party's confidence ahead of future electoral contests in the state.

Meanwhile, as of press time, the PDP and other opposition parties had not issued official statements regarding the Appeal Panel's decision or whether they intend to pursue further legal action.
