Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended his sympathies to the Niger State Government and victims of the devastating flood disaster in Mokwa Local Government Area.
Obi, who arrived at the Government House in Minna with his delegation on Sunday, was received by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, who represented Governor Mohammed Umar Bago during the visit.
Speaking during the visit, Obi emphasized the national significance of Niger State's wellbeing, stating, "Whatever affects Niger State affects the entire nation. Considering its comparative advantage in agriculture, the state is capable of changing Nigeria for good."
The former governor suggested exploring alternative measures to mitigate the effects of recurring flood disasters, acknowledging that while flooding is a natural disaster that can only be managed, he promised to mobilize additional support for the victims.
Obi also offered prayers for the souls of those who lost their lives in the disaster and asked for divine comfort for their families and the entire people of Mokwa local government area.
In response, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, speaking through Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, described the flood disaster as "a national catastrophe" and expressed appreciation for Obi's visit, calling it "an honour to the state."
Bago assured that his administration would continue efforts to mitigate recurring floods and maintain public awareness campaigns urging residents to avoid settling near river banks. The governor also renewed his call for international and national support to alleviate the suffering of the victims.
According to recent updates from the Niger State Government, the death toll from the Mokwa flood has risen to 153, with two more bodies recovered in ongoing search operations.
