The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man identified as Wisdom Benoie for allegedly sexually assaulting his 15-year-old stepdaughter at their residence in Yalwan Tsakani, Bauchi.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Command's spokesman, CSP Ahmed Wakil, the suspect was confronted by local youths who accused him of secretly molesting his stepdaughter over an extended period.
"The situation came to light after the victim's father reported the matter to the (ORP) unit in the Yelwan Tsakani area of Bauchi," the police statement revealed.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect, who married the victim's mother and became the teenager's stepfather, had allegedly been entering the girl's room while her mother was asleep and engaging in non-consensual sexual acts on multiple occasions.
The victim, who had been suffering in silence, eventually confided in neighbors about her ordeal, leading to a coordinated action that caught the suspect in the act.
CSP Wakil stated that during interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to the crimes. The victim has been taken to a medical facility for examination and care.
The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Police Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation, after which the suspect will be charged to court for prosecution.
"The Command remains unwavering in its commitment to maintaining peace and security while ensuring justice for all victims of oppression," the statement concluded.
Police Response to Sexual Violence
This case highlights the ongoing challenge of sexual violence against minors in Nigeria, particularly within household settings where perpetrators often exploit positions of trust and authority.
The Bauchi State Police Command has demonstrated its commitment to addressing such crimes promptly, with the Commissioner's direct involvement signaling the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.
Child protection advocates continue to emphasize the importance of creating safe channels for young victims to report abuse, as many cases go unreported due to fear, shame, or lack of support systems.
