A young man was killed during a violent clash between rival cult groups at Enerhen Junction, the commercial nerve centre of Warri, Delta State, on Saturday evening.
The deadly confrontation between members of the Eiye and Vikings confraternities sent shockwaves through the bustling commercial area, forcing traders to hastily lock their shops as tension gripped the community.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the violence originated in Marine Quarters following a dispute over a woman. A member of the Eiye Confraternity allegedly made advances toward the girlfriend of a Vikings member during a party in the area, triggering hostilities between the groups.
In what appears to be a retaliatory attack, Eiye members reportedly stormed into town searching for Vikings affiliates. During this hunt, they encountered the victim walking along a road under construction by Julius Berger. The assailants allegedly attacked him with dangerous weapons, beating him until he died.
Community Disruption
The incident created significant disruption in the commercial district, with business activities grinding to a halt as shop owners closed their establishments fearing potential escalation of violence.
At the time of reporting, it remains unclear whether the deceased was affiliated with any cult group.
Attempts to get official confirmation from the Delta State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, had not responded to calls regarding the incident.
This latest cult-related violence adds to growing concerns about security in Delta State's urban centers, where rival cult activities have periodically disrupted peace and commerce.
Authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the killing as investigations continue.
