The Kogi State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of 21 Kano State athletes and officials who perished in a road accident while returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Acting SWAN Secretary in Kogi State, Olatunde Odimayo, the association described the incident as "tragic and painful" while extending condolences to the bereaved families, the Kano State Government, and SWAN Kano chapter.
"We are really traumatized by this tragic incident. Information reaching us indicates that these people were young, vibrant, and promising individuals who were determined to make Kano State proud both nationally and internationally," the statement read.
Call to Immortalize Fallen Heroes
The Kogi SWAN has urged the Kano State Government to take immediate steps to immortalize the deceased athletes and officials, recognizing their sacrifice for the state.
"SWAN Kogi is using this medium to call on the Kano State Government to, as a matter of urgency, immortalize these fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for the interest of the state," the statement emphasized.
The tragic accident occurred as the Kano State contingent was returning home after participating in the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, also known as Gateway Games 2025, which was hosted by Ogun State.
The incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a celebration of national sporting achievement, turning it into a moment of national mourning for the sports community across Nigeria.
