Former President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Godswill Akpabio have expressed profound grief over the tragic death of 22 Kano State athletes who died in a road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Sunday, Buhari said he was devastated by the recent tragedies in both Niger and Kano states, referring to the death of 151 Mokwa residents following severe flooding and the passing of the Kano athletes.

"I am deeply pained by the loss of lives due to the floods in Niger state and the road accident in Kano state. The deaths are painful and devastating," Buhari stated.

The former president offered his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased. "Condolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon," he added.

Similarly, Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the incident as a tragic loss. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio extended his condolences to Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the families of the victims.

"It is with profound sadness that I received the news of the tragic death of over 20 members of the Kano State contingent that participated in the National Sports Festival in Ogun State," Akpabio said.

"On behalf of my family, constituents, the Nigerian Senate and the entire National Assembly, I extend my deepest condolences to Your Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, the government, and people of Kano State," he continued.

The Senate President emphasized that the tragic loss serves as a reminder of life's fragility and the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of citizens, particularly the youth.

"We stand in solidarity with the families of the deceased and pray for their swift healing and comfort during this difficult time," Akpabio added.
