Elder statesman Adesunbo Onitiri has issued a stern warning to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governors Peter Obi of Anambra and Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, urging them to avoid actions and rhetoric that could destabilize Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released in Lagos on Saturday, Onitiri called on the three prominent political figures to demonstrate greater restraint and patriotism in their political engagements, emphasizing that heightened political tensions could threaten the nation's democratic stability.

"As one of the original democrats who risked our lives during the 1993–1994 struggle against military rule, we cannot sit idly by while some politicians create openings for anti-democratic forces to exploit," Onitiri stated.

Call for National Unity

The elder statesman highlighted that Nigeria's current economic and security challenges demand unity and collaboration across party lines. He urged both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition leaders to set aside partisan interests and work together for the benefit of all Nigerians.

"The Federal Government is making efforts to address the inherited economic and security issues since taking office in 2023. What is needed now is cooperation, not division," he emphasized.

Onitiri specifically criticized Atiku Abubakar's reported attempt to seek intervention from an American court to disqualify President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the move as unnecessary and unacceptable to most Nigerians.

The warning comes amid increasing political activities and rhetoric from key opposition figures as the country gradually approaches another election cycle, with many Nigerians concerned about the potential impact of divisive politics on the nation's fragile democracy.

Political analysts note that early campaigning and heightened tensions could distract from addressing pressing national challenges, including economic recovery, security concerns, and social development needs that require immediate attention regardless of political affiliations.
