Six people, including children, have lost their lives in a fatal road accident along Mbiabong Itam road, off Itu-Uyo Road in Akwa Ibom State, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, involving a collision between a tricycle (Keke) with registration number DUU407WZ and a DYNA truck without registration number.
FRSC Sector Commander Edward Odiete, in a statement released in Uyo, revealed that seven people were involved in the crash – four males, one female, and two children. All victims were confirmed dead at the scene before the arrival of FRSC operatives, except the driver of the DYNA truck who reportedly fled the scene.
"Upon inquiry as to the cause of the crash, it was gathered that the causal factor to the crash was speed related and brake failure according to eye witnesses," Odiete stated.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue, according to the FRSC statement.
The Sector Commander issued a stern warning to road users, particularly motorists, against reckless driving, speeding, wrong-way driving, and distracted driving. He emphasized that the tragic incident could have been avoided if proper safety measures and traffic regulations had been observed.
"The incident could have been avoided should the driver and rider observed certain degrees of safety measures and precautions, and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations," he added.
While extending condolences to the families of the deceased, Odiete urged all road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent further loss of lives and property due to road crashes.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety in Nigeria, where traffic accidents remain a significant cause of fatalities. The FRSC continues to advocate for safer driving practices and stricter adherence to traffic regulations across the country.
