The Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) has appealed to Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to fulfill his promise of establishing the State Disability Commission, which was due to be operational by the end of the first quarter of 2025.
Onyebuchi Mba, Chairman of JONAPWD Enugu State Chapter, made this appeal in a statement issued on Friday in Enugu, reminding the governor of the commitment he made during the last State Town Hall meeting.
"The governor should do well to fulfill his promise of establishing the Enugu State Disability Commission to give Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) a sense of belonging," Mba stated.
The association acknowledged Governor Mbah's transformative leadership and commitment to inclusivity but emphasized that PWDs continue to face significant socio-economic challenges and exclusion in the state.
"We call on the state government to prioritize the needs of PWDs by mainstreaming disability inclusion into governance and promoting equal representation and accessibility," the chairman appealed.
Mba expressed optimism that with collective support, PWDs could bring about positive change and ensure their rights are protected in Enugu State.
The establishment of a Disability Commission would serve as a specialized agency to address the unique challenges faced by persons with disabilities and ensure their full integration into society through policy implementation and advocacy.
