Two 330KV transmission towers along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi line collapsed on Wednesday night following a severe windstorm that struck Galadima Village in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The incident has raised significant concerns about the reliability of the region's power infrastructure as the damaged towers form a critical part of the high-voltage network connecting the Kainji Hydropower Plant to the Birnin Kebbi Substation—an essential component of Nigeria's national grid.

Local resident Malam Umar Galadima attributed the collapse to the deteriorating condition of the transmission infrastructure, stating that the towers could no longer withstand extreme weather events.

"These materials are not strong enough to withstand this kind of wind. We need to introduce modern ways of transmitting electricity. To be precise, all these electrical towers are outdated. They need to be replaced, they've outlived their time," he said.

Expressing the frustration shared by many in the community, Malam Umar added, "This is really bad for us. How long are we going to wait? This situation is becoming unbearable."

The collapse is expected to cause significant disruption to electricity supply not only in Kebbi State but potentially in surrounding states that depend on this transmission line.

Beyond the power infrastructure damage, the windstorm also reportedly caused damage to other properties and disrupted daily activities in affected communities across the area.

As of the time of filing this report, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not issued an official statement regarding the incident or provided a timeline for repairs.

The collapse highlights ongoing concerns about the aging power infrastructure in many parts of Nigeria and the need for modernization to withstand increasingly severe weather events.
