A 15-year-old girl is set to file a formal police complaint against controversial Nigerian entertainer Speed Darlington following his recent admission to having sexual relations with a minor, according to Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose.
The development comes after Speed Darlington, whose real name is Darlington Okoye and is also known as 'Akpi', confessed during a recent Instagram live session that he had defiled a 15-year-old girl. The admission, which coincidentally occurred on Children's Day, sparked outrage across social media platforms.
Despite the entertainer later claiming his statement was merely a prank intended to generate controversy and promote his new song, public calls for investigation have continued to mount.
Victim Identified
In a video message shared on his Instagram page, Isaac Fayose revealed that the victim has been identified and plans to make a formal complaint accompanied by her mother.
"Akpi was thinking it was a joke, but unfortunately for him, we now have a victim coming forward tomorrow to write a statement at the police station with her mother," Fayose stated. "Akpi, you're going to be the latest pedophile in Nigeria. You're going to join the likes of R. Kelly."
Fayose further emphasized that the case has attracted international attention, adding, "I'm currently in Dubai, people are talking about it. This one, you can't sweep it under the carpet."
Concerns Over Child Protection
The incident has reignited discussions about child protection in Nigeria, with Fayose lamenting the state of affairs in his video message: "Nigeria is the most lawless nation in the world. Even our children, the value they are getting now is so low. No law at all... Where is the protection for our children?"
If the complaint proceeds as indicated, law enforcement agencies will be expected to commence formal investigations into Speed Darlington's admission and determine whether criminal charges are warranted.
The case continues to develop as public attention remains focused on the serious nature of the allegations and the broader implications for child protection in Nigeria.
