A Nigerian pilgrim identified as Hajiya Zainab from Plateau State has earned widespread commendation after returning a missing sum of $5,000 (equivalent to over ₦8 million) to its rightful owner, a Russian pilgrim, in Makkah.

According to reports, Hajiya Zainab discovered the money shortly after completing her prayers at Masjidul Haram. Rather than keeping the substantial sum for herself, she promptly reported the find to authorities, demonstrating remarkable honesty during the holy pilgrimage.

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) worked in coordination with Saudi authorities to successfully identify and return the money to the Russian pilgrim who had lost it.

Pilgrim's Integrity Praised by Officials

Hon. Daiyabu Dauda, Executive Secretary of the Plateau State Pilgrims Board, confirmed the incident and praised Zainab's actions. "She demonstrated exceptional integrity and honesty. What she did is a remarkable act of kindness that many will find difficult to do," Dauda stated.

The National Hajj Commission also expressed pride in Zainab's conduct, noting that her action exemplifies the values that Nigerian pilgrims are expected to uphold during the sacred journey.

This act of honesty comes at a time when Nigerian pilgrims have been repeatedly advised by authorities to maintain good conduct and uphold the country's image while performing the Hajj. Earlier, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had warned pilgrims not to tarnish the state's image and to follow rules during the pilgrimage.

The 2025 Hajj operations continue across Saudi Arabia with Nigerian authorities working to ensure pilgrims have a smooth experience, including arrangements for Nigerian food to be served as confirmed during NAHCON's recent inspection of catering services.
