The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has officially summoned controversial Nigerian entertainer Darlington Okoye, widely known as Speed Darlington, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving a minor.
The summons follows disturbing comments made by the singer during a recent Instagram Live session, where he allegedly claimed to have engaged in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
According to reports, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) escalated the matter to NAPTIP, calling for an immediate and thorough investigation into the claims made by the entertainer.
In the wake of public backlash, Speed Darlington attempted to walk back his statements by releasing a follow-up video. In this video, he claimed the controversial remarks were merely part of a promotional strategy for an upcoming song release. He also offered an apology for any offense or distress his comments may have caused.
NAPTIP, in a statement issued on Thursday, confirmed that it had formally summoned the singer for questioning regarding the incident. The agency further warned that appropriate legal action would be taken should Speed Darlington fail to honor the invitation.
"NAPTIP reiterates its commitment to upholding the rights of minors and ensuring accountability in all cases of alleged sexual abuse or exploitation," the statement read in part.
This incident comes amid increasing scrutiny of public figures' conduct and statements regarding minors, with Nigerian authorities showing greater willingness to investigate such claims regardless of celebrity status.
The case has sparked significant discussion on social media, with many Nigerians condemning the singer's initial statements and questioning the appropriateness of claiming such serious matters were merely promotional tactics.
Speed Darlington, who has built a controversial persona in the Nigerian entertainment industry, has previously made headlines for various provocative statements and behaviors on social media platforms.
The investigation is ongoing, and further developments are expected as NAPTIP proceeds with its inquiry into the matter.
