The Lagos State Government has invested more than N8.47 billion to sponsor 143 festivals and cultural events across the state over the past year, Tourism Commissioner Toke Benson-Awoyinka revealed on Thursday.

Speaking during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing at Alausa, Ikeja, Benson-Awoyinka highlighted that this substantial investment is already yielding significant benefits for the state, including job creation, youth engagement, local economic growth, and increased global media visibility.

"Through the ministry, the Creative Arts Department sponsored the festivals with the sum of approximately N8,475,238,265. This robust investment reflects the Ministry's unwavering commitment to positioning Lagos as the leading hub for art, culture, and entertainment in Africa," the Commissioner stated.

Benson-Awoyinka noted that several government agencies, including the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture and the Lagos State Films and Videos Censors Board, collaborated closely with the ministry to ensure the successful implementation of these cultural initiatives.

Strategic Partnerships and Cultural Preservation

"Over the past year, we have expanded our reach, deepened strategic partnerships both locally and internationally, and delivered impactful initiatives that not only showcase the beauty and diversity of Lagos but also empower our youth and creative entrepreneurs," she explained.

The Commissioner highlighted several notable events that received support, including the Fanti Carnival, Kurunmi Stage Play, Africa Fashion Designers Award, and the Badagry International Film Festival. She emphasized that these events serve multiple purposes beyond entertainment, including preserving cultural heritage and stimulating local economies.

According to Benson-Awoyinka, these cultural programs align with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly the fifth pillar, which focuses on entertainment and tourism development as key economic drivers for the state.

The investment represents a significant commitment by the Lagos State Government to leverage its rich cultural heritage as a catalyst for economic growth, tourism development, and international recognition.
