Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr. Lawal Olohungbebe, has expressed serious concerns over delays affecting students taking the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the state.
According to a statement released by Peter Amogbonjaye, the ministry's press secretary in Ilorin, the commissioner attributed these disruptions to the late arrival of examination materials, which notably affected the English Language papers.
Olohungbebe voiced his concerns on Wednesday during an on-the-spot assessment tour of several schools across Moro, Ilorin East, Ilorin South, and Ilorin West local government areas, describing the situation as regrettable.
The commissioner called on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to implement better logistics and strategies to prevent similar incidents in future examinations.
Despite the challenges, Olohungbebe commended students, teachers, and parents for their resilience, patience, and discipline during the delays. He praised their orderly conduct, noting that it helped maintain calm and ensured examinations proceeded smoothly once materials arrived.
"The resilience shown by our students and the support from teachers and parents during this challenging period is commendable. Their orderly conduct ensured that despite the delays, the examination process continued without further disruptions once materials arrived," the commissioner stated.
Olohungbebe reaffirmed the state government's commitment to quality education and its readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure the smooth conduct of future examinations.
Schools visited during the commissioner's assessment tour included Government Day Secondary School, Shao (Moro LGA), Army Day Secondary School, Sobi, Government Day Secondary School, Karuma, and Government Day Secondary School, Oja-Gbooro.
Other institutions on the tour included Al-Mumeen International School (Ilorin East LGA), Government Day Secondary School, Oke-Kere (Ilorin South LGA), Ansarul Islam Secondary School, and College of Arabic and Islamic Studies Secondary School in Ilorin West LGA.
