A 75-year-old Nigerian pilgrim from Edo State, Mrs. Adizatu Dazumi, has passed away in Saudi Arabia while performing the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The deceased, who hailed from Jattu Uzairue in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, died on Monday at the King Fahad General Hospital in Makkah after a brief illness.
Malam Musah Uduimoh, Chairman of the Edo State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, confirmed that Mrs. Dazumi fell ill shortly after performing Tawaaf—the ritual circumambulation around the Kaaba—and was subsequently admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
"In line with Islamic tradition, she was buried in Makkah on the same day she passed away, and her family in Jattu Uzairue had been duly informed of the development," Uduimoh stated.
The board chairman expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family while reassuring other pilgrims that the board remains vigilant in safeguarding their health and welfare throughout the remainder of the pilgrimage.
The annual Hajj pilgrimage, one of the five pillars of Islam, draws millions of Muslims from around the world to Saudi Arabia each year, including thousands from Nigeria.
Health challenges among elderly pilgrims remain a concern during Hajj, particularly given the physically demanding nature of the rituals and the extreme desert climate of Saudi Arabia.
