New Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has revealed his plans for England international Jude Bellingham, describing the midfielder as a "generational talent" who will be "fundamental" to his squad at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Speaking at his first press conference on Monday following his official unveiling as Carlo Ancelotti's successor, Alonso addressed questions about Bellingham's potential role under his management.
"What Bellingham's role will be? I see him in midfield," Alonso stated. "He's generational, he can play anywhere. He will be fundamental for us."
Under former manager Ancelotti, Bellingham initially thrived in an advanced midfield position, making late runs into the box and operating as a shadow striker. However, following Kylian Mbappe's arrival from Paris Saint-Germain, the 21-year-old was repositioned to a deeper, slightly wider role in the left half-space.
This tactical adjustment allowed the former Borussia Dortmund star to dictate play more effectively while contributing to Madrid's overall balance on the pitch.
Alonso's comments suggest he recognizes Bellingham's versatility and intends to utilize his exceptional talents in the midfield area, though the exact positioning remains to be seen as the new manager implements his tactical vision at the Spanish giants.
The appointment of Alonso comes after his impressive stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German club to unprecedented success. His arrival at Real Madrid marks a return to the club where he enjoyed a distinguished playing career from 2009 to 2014.
