Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has identified several shortcomings in his team's performance after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal in their FIFA Club World Cup opener on Wednesday at the Hard Rock Stadium in the USA.
The Spanish giants failed to secure a victory despite expectations, with goals from Gonzalo Garcia for Real Madrid and Ruben Neves for Al Hilal ensuring both teams shared the points in their first group stage match of the tournament.
Alonso Highlights Areas for Improvement
Speaking at his post-match interview, Alonso was candid about his team's performance, particularly in the first half. "We lacked a lot of things in the first half, both on and off the ball," the Spanish manager stated.
"I asked the players at half time to be a little more patient with the ball, to stop rushing. We were definitely better in the second half," Alonso added, acknowledging the improvement after the break.
The manager specifically pointed to issues with ball possession and control as key factors in the disappointing result. "What we need to improve? The balance on the ball. In the second half, we had longer phases of possession, we got closer to their box, it was better. It wasn't enough, but it was better," he explained.
This result puts pressure on Real Madrid in their remaining group matches as they aim to advance in the tournament. The draw represents a significant achievement for Al Hilal, who managed to hold one of the world's most prestigious clubs to a stalemate.
Real Madrid entered the competition as one of the favorites, but this early setback raises questions about their form and adaptability in the tournament format.
The Club World Cup, which has expanded its format for the 2025 edition, features top clubs from around the world competing for global supremacy.
