At least 18 people have lost their lives and eight others sustained injuries in a devastating road accident along the Gada Biyu–Apata Road in Kogi State on Sunday evening.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on Monday, the fatal crash occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday and involved a Dangote commercial trailer and a Toyota Hiace bus.

Both vehicles were reportedly traveling from Ondo State to Zamfara State when the collision happened. The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, resulting in 17 of the 18 deceased victims being burnt beyond recognition.

While the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, eyewitnesses have suggested that excessive speed and possible brake failure may have contributed to the tragedy.

The eight injured passengers were promptly evacuated to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for medical treatment. Hospital officials have indicated that the survivors are responding to treatment, though detailed information about their conditions has not been disclosed.

Following the incident, emergency responders worked to clear the accident scene to restore normal traffic flow along the busy route.

This tragic incident adds to the growing concerns about road safety in Nigeria, particularly on interstate highways where commercial vehicles frequently operate.

Authorities have yet to release official statements regarding potential measures to prevent similar accidents in the future.
