President Bola Tinubu is set to depart Abuja for Lagos on Tuesday to join other West African leaders in commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), according to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information & Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The ECOWAS golden jubilee celebrations, which were officially launched in Accra last month, will feature several significant events in Lagos, including a reenactment of the historic 1975 declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) in Victoria Island.
As the current Chairman of ECOWAS, President Tinubu will deliver a keynote address at Eko Hotels and Suites highlighting the regional bloc's major achievements over the past five decades. The Chairman of NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, will present a comprehensive review of the organization's 50-year journey, which will be followed by panel discussions.
General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), the only surviving Head of State who signed the original ECOWAS declaration in 1975, will participate in all ceremonies and deliver a special address at the Eko Hotels venue. Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will deliver the welcome address at the event.
While in Lagos, President Tinubu will also use the opportunity to commission several infrastructure projects on Saturday, May 31. These include Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, and the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, as well as the 7th Axial Road.
The President will also virtually commission several road projects in northern Nigeria, including the Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road, Yakasai-Zalli Road, and flag off the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.
According to the statement, President Tinubu will observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.
