The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has issued a scathing criticism of Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing him of failing to protect citizens from deadly Fulani herdsmen attacks that have recently ravaged several communities in the state.
According to a statement released on Monday by PDP's publicity secretary, Tim Nyor, the recent attacks in Aondona, Tse Orbiam, Ahume, and other communities in Gwer-West and Guma Local Government Areas have resulted in over 20 fatalities and destruction of properties valued at millions of naira.
The opposition party expressed deep concern over what it described as the governor's "lackadaisical attitude" toward the security challenges facing Benue communities, particularly noting that Governor Alia was reportedly hosting a dinner for Benue artists while the Aondoana attacks were ongoing.
"We demand from the governor, as the Chief Security Officer, an immediate intervention and comprehensive measures to be put in place to protect Benue communities from the rampaging herdsmen," the statement read.
The PDP further called on Governor Alia to hold the Fulani herdsmen accountable for their actions and strengthen the enforcement of the Anti-Open Grazing Law to prevent further attacks on Benue communities.
In a direct appeal to the federal government, the party urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and stop further bloodshed in Benue, claiming that Governor Alia appears "inefficient, nonchalant, and compromising in handling the security situation in the state."
The opposition party expressed particular concern that nearly 24 hours after the Aondona attack, Governor Alia had not issued a statement condemning the incident, which they believe "conveys an unmistakable impression of a Chief Security Officer who has abandoned his primary responsibility."
The PDP concluded its statement by extending sympathies to the bereaved families in Gwer-West and Guma, offering prayers for the peaceful repose of the departed souls.
As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from Governor Alia or his administration regarding these allegations.
