The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vehemently condemned the Federal Capital Territory Authority (FCTA) for sealing its National Secretariat in Abuja, describing the action as an "abuse of power" and a "direct assault on Nigeria's democracy."
According to reports, the FCTA sealed the opposition party's headquarters over alleged failure to pay ground rent for a period spanning 28 years.
Speaking after an emergency caucus meeting held at the Bauchi Governors' Lodge in Abuja on Monday evening, PDP's Acting National Chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, expressed strong disapproval of the action and warned that the party would not take the matter lightly.
"They should come and arrest all of us. We will not take this lightly. This is a clear attempt to undermine democracy, and we will hold them accountable," Damagum stated.
The acting chairman further alleged that the sealing of the secretariat was a deliberate attempt to destabilize the party. He described the government's action as irresponsible and unacceptable.
"If they are encouraging such actions, we do not take it lightly. They are attempting to undermine democracy, and this is completely unacceptable," he said.
Damagum added: "This is a clear example of the irresponsibility exhibited by this government. We condemn this act in the strongest terms. It is a reckless display of irresponsibility, and we will not tolerate it."
Meanwhile, an aide to the FCT Minister had reportedly claimed that the PDP National Secretariat owes over N7.6 million in ground rent.
The development has prompted the PDP Board of Trustees to hold an emergency meeting to address the situation and the party's relationship with the FCT Minister.
This incident marks another chapter in the ongoing tensions between Nigeria's main opposition party and the current administration as the political landscape continues to evolve ahead of future electoral contests.
