The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested 49 suspected internet fraudsters in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

According to a statement released by the anti-graft agency on Monday, the arrests were conducted during a two-day operation between Saturday, May 24, 2025, and Sunday, May 25, 2025.

The EFCC revealed that the operation was based on actionable intelligence that linked the suspects to fraudulent internet activities. Multiple hideouts across the city were targeted during the raid.

In a concerning development, an unlicensed loaded pistol was recovered from one of the suspects, who reportedly claimed during preliminary interrogation that he was a former cult member.

The commission also seized various items from the suspects, including high-end smartphones, laptop computers, and two luxury vehicles.

"The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations," the EFCC statement affirmed.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Nigerian law enforcement agencies to combat the rising tide of internet fraud, which has damaged the country's international reputation and affected legitimate online businesses.

The EFCC continues to intensify its crackdown on cybercrime across Nigeria, with similar operations being conducted in various states in recent months.
