A 14-year-old girl from Gombe State who was forcibly married off to a wealthy man in Taraba State has been successfully rescued, state officials confirmed on Monday.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development in Gombe State, Asma'u Iganus, revealed that the teenager had been married to the man as his fourth wife, describing the situation as "a gross abuse of her fundamental rights."

"We will not tolerate this kind of abuse," Iganus stated firmly, adding that legal proceedings have already commenced "to secure her freedom and hold the perpetrators accountable."

Barrister Marilyn Na'omi from the Gombe State Ministry of Justice also weighed in on the case, emphasizing that the government would ensure consequences for those involved in the illegal marriage.

"No child should face such a violation," Na'omi declared, underscoring the government's commitment to protecting children's rights in the state.

The case highlights the ongoing challenge of child marriage in Nigeria, where despite legal provisions against the practice, cultural traditions and economic factors continue to put young girls at risk.

Child marriage remains a significant issue across several Nigerian states despite the Child Rights Act, which sets the minimum age of marriage at 18 years. However, not all states have domesticated this federal law.

Authorities have not yet released details about how the marriage was arranged or the identity of those responsible, but have promised a thorough investigation into the matter.

The rescued girl is reportedly receiving necessary support and care while legal proceedings continue against those involved in arranging the illegal marriage.
