Real Madrid legend Toni Kroos has revealed he is not surprised by the club's decision to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager, describing the move as "a great step" for both parties.
The Spanish giants officially announced Alonso as their new head coach on Sunday, with the 43-year-old set to replace Carlo Ancelotti at the Santiago Bernabéu.
"Xabi Alonso? I'm not surprised. I wish him success, and I think this is a great step for him and for Real Madrid," Kroos told Sky Sport News.
Alonso joins Real Madrid after a successful stint at Bayer Leverkusen, which he recently left at the end of the season to take up the prestigious role in the Spanish capital.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder will be formally introduced as the new manager at Madrid's training ground on Monday, marking his return to the club where he enjoyed a successful playing career from 2009 to 2014.
Alonso's first challenge will come quickly as he prepares to lead Real Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup. His debut match as manager will be against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal on June 18.
The appointment comes as part of a significant managerial reshuffle, with reports suggesting that Erik ten Hag has agreed to become Bayer Leverkusen's new manager following Alonso's departure.
Alonso takes over from Ancelotti, who recently reflected on his legacy at Real Madrid during the LaLiga final day, urging fans to remember him for his contributions to the club.
