Real Madrid icon Luka Modric has revealed that the club's dramatic 3-1 comeback victory against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the 2021/22 UEFA Champions League Round of 16 stands as his most memorable match during his illustrious career with the Spanish giants.
The Croatian midfielder, who has confirmed his departure from Los Blancos at the end of this season, made the revelation while speaking to the press after his final La Liga appearance for Real Madrid against Real Sociedad on Saturday, which ended in a 2-0 victory.
When asked to select one game to remember from his time at the Santiago Bernabeu, Modric said: "One game to remember? Difficult but I'd say [the game] vs PSG. That was incredible. I said that we would have won the Champions League if we had won that tie."
The match Modric referenced was a defining moment in Real Madrid's 2021/22 Champions League campaign. After losing the first leg 1-0 at Parc des Princes with Kylian Mbappe scoring for PSG, the French star struck again at the Bernabeu to give the visitors a 2-0 aggregate lead.
However, Karim Benzema orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, netting a second-half hat-trick within just 17 minutes to secure a 3-1 victory on the night and a 3-2 aggregate win. Real Madrid went on to lift the Champions League trophy that season, validating Modric's prediction.
The 38-year-old midfielder's final appearance for Real Madrid in La Liga marked the end of an era, with the Croatian set to leave the club this summer after the Club World Cup. Since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modric has established himself as one of the greatest midfielders in the club's history, winning numerous domestic and international honors, including five Champions League titles.
While Modric's next destination remains unconfirmed, his legacy at Real Madrid is firmly secured as one of the club's most influential players of the modern era.
