Benue State Governor has condemned the recent attack on communities in Gwer-West Local Government Area and the shooting of Reverend Father Solomon Atongu by suspected terrorists along the Makurdi–Naka road.

According to a statement issued by the Governor's spokesman, Sir Tersoo Kula, Governor Alia expressed profound outrage and deep sorrow over the attacks on Tse-Orbiam and Ahume communities, where scores of residents are feared killed.

The statement highlighted that the attacks occurred just meters away from a military checkpoint, describing the incident as "a stark reminder of the pervasive violence and lawlessness that have plagued the dilapidated Makurdi–Naka road in recent times."

Governor Alia expressed gratitude that Rev. Fr. Atongu, who was initially in critical condition, is now stable. He extended his solidarity with the Catholic community, particularly the Bishop and faithful of the Makurdi Diocese, as they pray for the priest's quick recovery.

"These barbaric criminals masquerading as herders, whose actions reveal a blatant disregard for human life and the sanctity of our communities, their cowardice in attacking innocent individuals, especially our natives, will not be tolerated," the Governor was quoted as saying.

The Governor reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Benue residents, stating that he stands resolute with the traditional institution, which recently mandated the immediate evacuation of criminal herders and their terrorist accomplices from Benue lands.

Governor Alia has directed security agencies to pursue the terrorists and ensure the safe rescue of those kidnapped alongside Rev. Fr. Atongu. He also called on security forces to intensify efforts in safeguarding communities and ensuring that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

"As we continue to mourn the loss of our brothers and sisters, our very peace-loving natives, let us unite in our resolve to eradicate the scourge of violence and ensure that our communities become safe havens for all," the statement added.

The Governor urged all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities as part of collective efforts to combat insecurity in the state.
