Renowned Nigerian music executive, Don Jazzy, has publicly expressed his frustration after a food vendor attempted to leverage a free plate of nkwobi to secure a performance from his star artist, Rema.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the Mavin Records boss recounted how the vendor first offered him complimentary nkwobi, only to later request that Rema perform at her upcoming event without compensation.
"Out of nowhere you give me free nkwobi that I didn't ask for, which you insisted. I accepted and ate it. Suddenly, you want me to return the favour — you're asking me to give you Rema?" Don Jazzy stated in the video shared on his Instagram page.
Visibly annoyed by the exchange, the music mogul questioned the logic behind the vendor's request: "How does it even add up? Is the exchange rate for me? Because of nkwobi?"
The incident has prompted Don Jazzy to issue a public warning, declaring that he would no longer accept free gifts. "No one should give me free gift again. I don't want it," he emphasized, citing this experience as the reason he typically avoids accepting complimentary items.
This situation highlights the challenges music executives and artists face with unreasonable requests for free performances or appearances, often disguised as goodwill gestures.
Rema, who signed to Mavin Records in 2019, has risen to become one of Nigeria's biggest music exports with international hits like "Calm Down" and "Dumebi." The artist's growing global profile has significantly increased his performance value, making the vendor's proposed exchange particularly unrealistic.
Don Jazzy's candid response has sparked conversations online about respect for artists' value and the importance of proper business practices in Nigeria's entertainment industry.
